Where “X” plays up the grit and gloom, “Pearl” slams in with a distinctly technicolor, Disney flavor. A familiar premise — a star-to-be is kept in a small town by her restrictive parents — is upended when ambition takes a not-so-heart-warming turn.
Like Maxine, Pearl will not accept a life she does not deserve.
